Abstract

This paper makes an attempt to investigate emerging type of social inequality, which is expressed in unequal allocation of urban space. I would like to study the case of Astana, the second capital of Kazakhstan, which is now passing through definite changes in urban life. Namely establishing of market economy and capitalistic city changed the social relations, affected on the appearance of new social groups in urban structure and their different allocation in urban space.

The main purpose of paper is exploring changing socio – spatial organization of Astana and expression of spatial inequality in urban area.

Main research question of the paper is how does the urban space change or transform and what type of urban spatial forms are dominating now?

We observe that in the urban space of Astana have emerged new types of inequality, which express in spatial and residential differentiation. It`s obvious that the urban social spaces overtime and everywhere were variegated, there were always both progressive and regressive districts in urban inner area. Then what are the peculiarities of new type of spatial inequality in the case of Astana? We assume that there is prevailing one, the types of inequality which are typical to western city, than soviet one. We observe that in today’s city the outer sites of it becomes as much popular and desirable to locate by urban citizen. Thus we make an attempt to show that socio – spatial organization of Astana is gradually changing its vector of development from soviet type city to the capitalistic one, relatively there changes the forms of spatial and residential inequality.
